India has a long-standing tradition of serving food on banana leaves. Especially in places down South, eating food on banana leaves is considered quite healthy and auspicious. Most people use banana leaves to serve an authentic south Indian spread on festivals and family get-togethers. They are also considered quite sacred and are often used for offering prasad to the deities. These thick leaves are big enough to serve a multi-course meal. You can also cut these leaves in different sizes and place them on platter of any size.

Banana leaves are loaded with nutrients we bet you didn't know about. Food when served on banana leaves gets enriched with several nutrients that we would otherwise miss read on to know more. Anti-oxidant Rich Banana leaves contain large amounts of polyphenols that are natural antioxidants. These are found in many plant-based foods and green tea. Food served on the banana leaves absorbs the polyphenols which are said to prevent many lifestyle diseases. They are also said to have anti-bacterial properties that can possibly kill the germs in food.
Having food on banana leaves is one of the most economical and inexpensive options to go for. You don't need to worry about spending those extra bucks on tons of utensils. Just grab few bananas leaves from the banana tree and you're done for the day. Just rinse the leaves with water and get going.
Make a smart move and ditch those plastic disposable and utensils as banana leaves are much more eco-friendly. Not only do they decompose in a very short time, which we all know most types of plastic do not, also, they save water, time and effort that one would have otherwise gone in washing the dishes. Also, Chemical based dish washing soaps and liquids further enter the ground water and could harm the water table in the long run.
It is always a good idea to eat on banana leaves as it is certainly more hygienic when compared to other disposables and utensils. Normal utensils have to be washed using soap and there are chances that traces of soap may still remain on the utensils even after washing. Those traces might end up contaminating your food. Banana leaves have a natural coating that prevents dirt and dust from sticking on the surface of leaves. It also adds subtle and earthy flavours to the dishes that are served on the leaves. The tradition of eating food on the banana leaves is not only a treat to the eyes but to the palate as well.
The first and foremost reason why banana leaf is used for serving food is because of its wide size and the partition that runs at centre which gives enough space to place variety of foods in a single leaf without mixing with each other. As Indian lunches are diverse and have many courses, only banana leaf can accommodate all courses and it is water proof too, which is very helpful for eating liquid dishes like Sambar, Rasam, curd, and Payasam.
Tender leaves are flexible and can be folded in any angle.
These leaves are non-sticky and so it is used for lining steamer trays
One of the major benefits of this leaf is that they are bio degradable and it won’t be a problem to discard them. Even burning these leaves is not harmful to the atmosphere.
Tamilians consider it to be an act of respect to serve the guests in banana leaf.
Eating hot food in this leaf is very healthy and hygienic. While the hot food is served on the leaf, rich nutrients from the leaf is emitted, which infuses with the food and eventually we intake it as we eat the food.
These leaves are rich in polyphenols such as epigallocatechin gallate, or EGCG, which is found in green tea.
These leaves are rich in polyphenols such as epigallocatechin gallate, or EGCG, which is found in green tea.
Top of all, the aroma that arises from the leaf when the hot food is laid on it is incredible. Even the ones don’t feel hungry would, find their mouth-watering when the food is served on the plantain leaf.

INCON EXIM, is one of the largest and best exporters when it comes to tea. We have tie ups with all the largest manufacturers and top tea estate owners in the country. Our teas are packed right at the gardens to preserve their fresh aroma, natural composition and freshness. We supply all the major varieties of tea in any volume to both domestic and international market.
India faces stiff competition from Kenya (which is world’s largest tea exporter) and Sri Lanka in tea exports. We note here that tea processing is of two kinds viz. orthodox and non-orthodox. The non-orthodox is also called CTC (crush, tear, curl). Kenya’s entire tea production is as CTC tea while Sri Lanka’s entire production is via orthodox method. Further, most of the tea prepared via orthodox method is consumed while via CTC method is exported. Thus, India’s Assam CTC Tea faces competition from Kenya while orthodox tea faces competition from Sri Lanka. Since qualities are similar, it’s the price and production which matter in exports.
The tea industry has an important and special place in the Indian economy. Tea is India’s primarybeverage, with almost 85% of total households in the country consuming tea. India is the world’ssecond largest producerand second largest consumer of tea. Further, certain varieties of tea (for example Darjeeling) aregrown only in India and are in great demand across the world. All Darjeeling teas possess thelightness of flavour and fine colouring that set them apart from all other teas.
Although South India accounts foraround 23‐25% of India’s tea production, around 30‐50% of its production is exported. Dependingon the year and market conditions, South India accounts for around 50% of India’s tea exports by volume.
